Rotary Botanical Gardens - Hort Blog: Chicago Botanic Garden Looks ...
Great day at the Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG) today. It was day 1 (of 8) for the Healthcare Garden Design Certificate Program. I left Janesville early so I could avoid rush hour traffic but did manage to catch the tail end of it just before arriving at the gardens (Glencoe, IL). I grew up in the Chicago suburbs but have lost the knack for aggressive driving with no signals or regard for others. I'm sure I'll pick it back up again soon enough. My program started at 9 am but I had a good hour to take some photos around the gardens after arriving at 8 am and actually tallied up over 400 photos [suite...]

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Plant Extravaganza!
In 1945, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden started the Daffodil Bridge Party, selling several varieties of plants to bring people to the garden and make some money at the same time. The plant sale grew even as bridge parties went out of style, moving to Magnolia Plaza, the Lily Pool Terrace and to Cherry Esplanade, where it is today. Now, the Plant Sale at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is in its 57th year and has grown to be the largest of its kind in the Northeast, with over 20,000 plants available. Held Wednesday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, May 6, [suite...]

Denver Botanic Gardens: free admission on Friday
The Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield are free on Friday (May 7th) for Colorado residents! They’re open from 9 AM to 5 PM (no visitors admitted after 4:30 PM). More info here. What’s blooming? Their website says “New tulips are opening daily, in an astonishing array of colors. Come see brilliant yellow daffodils and tons of blossoms on trees.” Ah, sounds like it might be worth a trip to Denver since my gardens have never been that beautiful! It also looks like the York Street Gardens will be having a plant sale this Friday and Saturday, and it says it’s free. I’m not [suite...]

Enjoy Hanami at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden | Gowanus Lounge
Thank goodness its spring again. It is such a relief when the weather begins to turn warm, the trees begin to sprout their new, baby-green leaves, and the early flowers start to bloom. Where better to enjoy the changing of the seasons than at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. There is an especially wonderful way to really get into the spring mood, and that is participating in the Japanese tradition of Hanami- the celebration of the cherry blossom season, which is going on right now at the Botanic Garden, until May 2. As the BBG web site describes Hanami, it is the “New York City rite of [suite...]

Mom In Progress: Classes at Denver Botanic Gardens
Denver Botanic Gardens has a variety of classes that is both impressive and somewhat intimidating to your average mom. So, I picked one that I thought would be a good place to start: the Edible Garden. The class is called The Edible Perennial Garden on May 29 from 9-11am. The cost is $29 for non-members and will focus on learning how to combine a perennial garden with your edible fruit and vegetables plants. What's great about a class like this is not just that you get a break from your normal routine and the hum of kids running wild, but that you can walk away with new knowledge and a plan [suite...]

'Pink Haze' but Blue to me. Iris sibirica, Brooklyn Botanic Garden ...
It was a gorgeous morning when the efficient New York MTA spit me out into the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, maybe half an hour out of Manhattan. A relatively compact Garden, it boasts much that is beautiful, among which the oldest public Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden in the USA (1914-15). But today this Iris caught my fancy, in fact through its label as a Siberian Iris 'Pink Haze'. I saw not a bit of pink but only this luscious almost purplish blue surrounding foamy white. The little hover fly was apparently as attracted as I. These lovely Irises were already described in the eighteenth century [suite...]

Penang Botanic Garden can learn from Thais « anilnetto.com
Actually, the Penang Botanic Garden once had a masterplan, the Clive Justice Master Plan, which was just not implemented. Clive Justice was a Canadian Executive Services Overseas (CESO) volunteer who was working on the landscaping of Kuala Lumpur in 1985. (The CESO programme is a Canadian programme of senior and experienced professionals about to retire and who wish to contribute in various parts of the world. They are only paid their expenses and no consultation fees.) Clive Justice had designed a number of Botanic Gardens in Vancouver and he agreed to help translate development plans of [suite...]

Stop! Who is destroying the Penang Botanic Garden?
The Working Group of the Penang Forum expresses alarm over the building of concrete structures and the destruction of the natural beauty at the Penang Botanic Garden. Our Penang Botanic Garden, founded in 1884, is one of our most treasured possessions. Set up as a botanical institute and propagation centre, it also provided cool lush greenery and a quiet haven for the growing population of the city. It has always had a very special place in the hearts of Penangites. But now we see colossal concrete structures and ad-hoc destruction of plant houses and plant collections taking place. [suite...]
