Being There: 2010 National Toboggan Championships in Camden, Maine
On Sunday, February 7 2010, the same day that a couple of dozen multimillionaires took to the field for the Super Bowl, watched by hundreds of millions of couch potato eyes, a hundred or so tobogganers with no sponsorships or contracts or monetary gain in sight gathered on the side of Ragged Mountain in Camden Maine to race their toboggans down a chute onto the frozen ice of Hosmer Pond. Quite a different athletic scene. This short video footage gives you just a glimpse of what it was like to be there.

Oktoberfest Toboggan 2
We sat and watched this ride at Oktoberfest in Munich (2009) for the better part of an hour. It was so funny.. and got even funnier as the night got later. Info abt the ride: First established in 1906, the current edition of this tower-slide has been featured since 1933. Its name is derived from Canadian Algonquin Indians, who termed their wooden snow slides "toboggans." Visitors to this ride first have to step on a running band conveyor, which carries them to the top of the tower. From here the slide starts continuing on in precipitous loops. Toboggan is a rare ride only to be found on very few fairgrounds. But be advised to stop by before visiting the tents. The running is fast and sobriety helps!

Tobogganing: Leon and Tim, Crazy Hats and a Near Miss! "Got Snow?"
Leon and Tim go on a late afternoon toboggan excursion at a hill along Hines Park Drive. Three exciting runs, including a near-miss with a pink-tufted ninny -- an indigenous creature showing all the signs of youthful ineptitude. Meaning we nearly had a case of "girl hit by toboggan" piloted by two out of control crazy dudes. Featuring the playful song, "Ti Plad (Flat Roof)" by the French quartet, "Stone Edge" aka "Stone Age" from Brittany -- whatever happened to them? www.stone-age.fr

Ellie toboggans off the roof of our house.
Here's my daughter Ellie tobogganing off the roof of our house. Since my daughter was born, when I shovel the driveway I throw the snow in a pile in the backyard to make a "mountain" for the kids. But in the past, the Ontario winter freeze/thaw cycle and my lack of energy by the end of the season usually meant a hill of only 6 foot high or so. But this year, with the arrival of Uncle Pete - we've (actually he did it himself) made the roof! If the kids choose (they don't yet) they can toboggan from the peak - ~18 feet!

Mountain Boy Toboggans
Mountain Boggans are true classic toboggans, made by hand with steam-bent planks of flexible basswood, with hand-carved willow crosspieces. This video was filmed at Cinnamon Pass near Silverton, Colorado.
