Clay Firing -- Bois Blanc Primitive Gathering 2008

We made pots out of natural earth clay, courtesy of Erik Vosteen of BurntMud.com. Then with his help we fired them in a fire that started at 600F and got boosted to 1400F thanks to a special added dose of kindling. This vid shows the "big fire" phase---this is when the clay pots turn into ceramic pottery. Or not. Sometimes you just hear "pop" as they shatter. It's a dramatic moment. We got lucky and they all turned out. (Eric started this fire with a hand-drill. Whoa...) [ voir sur Youtube.com ]

The Kids of Bois Blanc Primitive Gathering 2008

A passle of kids played nonstop during the primitive skills gathering. They also had some serious times where they learned knife safety and used and carried knives---with only one small cut in several days. [ voir sur Youtube.com ]
